You can learn how to cook Indonesian food, make your own batik scarves, or take a village tour on a bicycle or with a tuk-tuk. We can take you to the plantation or rice fields where you can help the farmers grow food and trees and chop wood. It is also a great workout 💪. Transport

We do provide transport to and from Medan or the airport Kuala Namu. We offer a private car, the driver will be waiting for you at the airport or pick you up in Medan. This will cost 700.000 IDR and will take about 3 hours to arrive in Bukit Lawang.

You can also take the public bus. This is the cheapest option, but the buses are in a poor state, with no air conditioning and will stop many times. It will take you about 5 hours to arrive at your end destination if you start from the airport. If you choose this option, you have to take the ALS (Antar Lintas Sumatera) bus from the airport Kuala Namu to Binjai. This costs 60.000 IDR. There you take a second bus to Bukit Lawang. This will cost 25.000 IDR. You do have to change the bus station in Binjay, you can take a tuk-tuk for this.

If you start from the city Medan, you have to go to the Pinang Baris bus station. There you can take the bus straight to Bukit Lawang. This will take about 4 hours and costs 50.000 IDR. Don’t let them ask you more, they will for sure try.

Next to the public bus, there is another bus, named Amasar, going straight from the airport Kuala Namu to Bukit Lawang. You can buy a ticket when you are at the airport, it costs 80.000 IDR. These buses do have air conditioning. The drive takes about 5 hours.

Finally, you can also take the train from the airport to Binjay. This will cost 80.000 IDR. From there you have to take the minibus to Bukit Lawang which will cost 25.000 IDR. You will have to change location, you can take a tuk-tuk for that.

When being in the jungle, you get away from your daily struggles with nothing than nature around you. The treks are challenging, which gives you a very fulfilling feeling when arriving back in the village or at the camp. It is a great experience just being surrounded by all this beauty. On top of that, there are only two places in the world where you can see orangutans. North Sumatra is one of them.

Many people that come to Bukit Lawang either extend their visit, or come back one day. It is hard to explain when you’ve never been there, but the place has something magical. Come and experience the special vibes and great nature yourself!
